Tales from Byzantium

For over a thousand years one city stood as the bastion of the West against the forces of barbarism. Among its weapons were Greek Fire, heavily armoured cataphracts, and the tortuous diplomacy that made "Byzantine" synonymous with intricacy and deceit. Yet, in its final hour, Byzantium achieved immortality as its people and their ruler joined in a glorious but hopeless struggle against overwhelming odds.

In this film Kendall Down tells of the empress with three husbands, the ships that sailed overland, the roof made of pumice and the church that made Russia Christian, as well as many other stories from a millennium of history.
